The 1969 SS396 was a mean horsepower making machine at a price of only $3,750. Weighing in at just 3,700 pounds and punching out a massive 375 horsepower, it produced one horsepower for every 8.26 pounds. In late 1969, the 396 was bored over to 402 but Chevy still called it a 396.
