The yellow Shooting Star always seemed to be just behind the Mach V and for good reason - the Shooting Star was driven by "Racer X," the masked racer who was actually Speed Racer's older brother Rex. Years earlier, Rex had crashed one of Pops Racer's cars and ran away when Pops told him he was too inexperienced to race professionally. After improving his driving skills, he becomes a professional driver mostly as a cover for a secret agent gig he has with the "International Police." In the Shooting Star, Racer X can keep one eye on his little brother, and the other on the villain of the day.
