Volkswagen was looking to create a new kind of car, a car that would set VW apart from the rest. Contracting with Karmann, one of Germany's finest coachbuilding firms, to help in the design, the Karmann Ghia was on the drawing table. Looking for assistance with the new project Karmann approached the famed Italian styling house Carrozzeria Ghia. The interior was better equipped, the structure was stronger, and the engine was faster. It was a German Italian match made in import car heaven.
